REOPENING OF VACCINES PRODUCING PSUS .

3656. SHRI E.M. SUDARSANA NATCHIAPPAN

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:-

(a) whether the number of deaths caused due to adverse effects following immunization (AEFI) has risen by three times, to 128 in 2010 is the result of closure of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) involved production of vaccines; and

(b) if so, whether the monopoly of private sector in this field will be made competitive by reopening the PSUs with enhanced R & D?

Answer

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE

(SHRI SUDIP BANDYOPADHYAY)

(a): No. Though there is a rise in the reporting of Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) deaths in 2010 in comparison to last two years, it is not a threefold rise. In the year 2010, 138 AEFI deaths have been reported compared to 116 in 2009 and 111 in 2008. The increase is unrelated to closure of Public Sector Undertakings involved in production of vaccines and is due to strengthening of AEFI reporting system, publication and dissemination of revised guidelines, training of personnel and increased sensitization.

(b): The suspension of licence of PSUs to manufacture vaccine has been revoked paving the way for their participation in vaccine production.
