Parliament HIGHLIGHTS: Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill passed in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 got the stamp of Parliament when it was cleared by Rajya Sabha, five days after it got the nod from Lok Sabha.

Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019 through a voice vote with 108 votes in favour and 13 against. The Bill aims at improving road safety. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari moved the Bill in the Upper House. In Lok Sabha, Inter-State River Water Disputes (Amendment) Bill, 2019, was passed. The Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Amendment Bill, 2019 was also passed in the lower house by a voice vote.

During the zero hour, members from the Congress, DMK, NCP, RSP and IUML walked out of Lok Sabha protesting over the alleged threats to the life of the rape survivor and her family. Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury demanded a response from Home Minister Amit Shah on the matter. He said the Parliament opposed the sexist remarks made against a woman member, but why is it not on the same page when a woman’s life is under threat.

On Tuesday, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 got the stamp of Parliament when it was cleared by Rajya Sabha, five days after it got the nod from Lok Sabha. The Bill was passed with 99 votes in favour and 84 opposed after BJD came out in support, allies JD (U) and AIADMK walked out while the Opposition BSP, TDP and TRS did a no-show.
