The Congress leadership has renominated the party’s current four chairpersons of the House panels whose terms got just completed, including Shashi Tharoor as head of the House panel on external affairs and Digvijaya Singh of the committee on education, women, children, youth and sports. The Congress leadership publicised its recommendation to the Speaker for the renominations of its chairpersons, soon after the standing committees’ reconstitution was officially notified.
According to the Congress whip of the Lok Sabha, Manickam Tagore, “guided by Congress president Mallikarjun Khargeji, leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi” has recommended the renomination of the party’s four chairpersons. The other two renominations are that of Charanjit Singh Channi as head of the standing committee on agriculture, animal husbandry and food processing, and Saptagiri Ulaka as head of the panel on rural development and panchayati raj.
Earlier, reports about the government mulling extending (with retrospective effect) the terms of the current standing committees to two years surfaced amid speculation about whether the Congress leadership will be disinclined to extend the term of Tharoor given his comparatively independent stand on Operation Sindoor, including him joining the government’s global outreach teams much to the discomfort of the Congress leadership. The renomination of the Congress chairpersons puts an end to that question.
